Mexican Cops Bust Crypto Farm Near Hydroelectric Plant with 300 GPUs
Authorities in Mexico have discovered an illicit cryptocurrency mining operation near a hydroelectric power plant. The site, located in the municipality of Tlaola in the state of Puebla, was found to contain about 300 graphics processing units (GPUs), a transformer, and other equipment.
The investigation is ongoing, but authorities suspect that the farm used electricity illegally from the hydroelectric infrastructure of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). This is not the first time law enforcement has targeted cryptocurrency mining operations in Mexico; local police have been conducting operations in the area for years to identify sites linked to illegal electricity use.
The operation is part of a broader effort to crack down on illicit crypto activities, which are often tied to money laundering and other financial crimes. In fact, authorities are investigating whether the crypto assets obtained through this infrastructure could have been used to make illicit funds appear legitimate.
