Mexican Duo Arrested for Bitcoin-Targeting Homicide
Two suspects have been arrested in Mexico for their alleged involvement in a quadruple homicide that targeted a Bitcoin cold wallet believed to contain millions of dollars. The victims were Jonathan Meléndez, his pregnant wife, their daughter, and a household employee in Atizapán de Zaragoza.
Mexico's Attorney General's Office (FGJEM) claims one suspect had a personal connection with the family and used it to gain access to the home. The suspects may face lengthy prison terms if convicted, with prosecutors estimating 25-70 years per homicide victim.
The case highlights the growing trend of 'wrench attacks,' where criminals use violence or threats to coerce victims into handing over cryptocurrency or providing access to wallets. In the first half of 2026, there were 20 publicly reported home invasions targeting crypto holders in Mexico alone.
