Mexican Musician Slaughtered for Allegedly Holding Millions in Bitcoin Cold Wallet
A Mexican musician and his family were brutally murdered in their home after two men believed they possessed a cold wallet containing 'million-dollar amounts' in Bitcoin. The suspects, Diego Sebastián and Gerardo, allegedly targeted Camilo Séptimo keyboardist Jonathan Meléndez's residence in search of the crypto.
The victims included Meléndez, his pregnant wife Ana Paula Barragán, their three-year-old daughter Sofía, and 21-year-old domestic worker Aleyda Romero. The couple's six-year-old son miraculously survived the attack on September 1. Diego Sebastián is said to have used his relationship with Meléndez to gain access and offered Gerardo $118,000 to help obtain the Bitcoin.
The duo was arrested on September 2. Authorities noted that cold wallets store private keys, not the actual cryptocurrency, making them vulnerable to physical threats.
