Mexican Musician's Family Killed Over Alleged Multi-Million Dollar Bitcoin Stash

Mexican authorities have arrested two men in connection with the brutal murder of a musician and his family, who were targeted over a Bitcoin cold wallet allegedly containing millions of dollars. The victims included Jonathan Meléndez, keyboardist for the band Camilo Séptimo, his pregnant wife Ana Paula Barragán, their three-year-old daughter Sofía, and 21-year-old domestic worker Aleyda Romero.

The family's six-year-old son survived the attack. According to investigators, Diego Sebastián, a business associate of Meléndez, used their relationship to gain access to the home in search of a cold wallet that he believed contained 'million-dollar amounts' in Bitcoin.

Sebastián allegedly offered his accomplice, Gerardo, 2 million pesos (approximately $118,000) to help obtain the crypto. Cold wallets are devices that store private keys, not the actual cryptocurrency itself, making them vulnerable to physical attacks.

The tragic incident is part of a growing trend of violent attacks targeting crypto holders, with Chainalysis documenting 46 such incidents through June, resulting in over $30 million stolen during the first half of this year. Home invasions accounted for 37% of these documented cases.
