Mexican Quadruple Homicide Suspects Accused of Seeking Millions in Bitcoin
Two suspects in Mexico's quadruple homicide are set to face a court hearing on Wednesday, where a judge will decide if there is enough evidence for them to stand trial. Diego Sebastián and Gerardo allegedly killed Jonathan Meléndez, his pregnant wife, their daughter, and an employee at their home in Atizapán de Zaragoza. The suspects are accused of seeking a cold wallet containing millions of dollars in Bitcoin.
The Attorney General's Office of the State of Mexico (FGJEM) announced the arrests on September 2 via X post. Prosecutors claim that if convicted, the suspects could face 25 to 70 years in prison per homicide victim.
This is not an isolated incident. According to CertiK, the first half of 2026 saw 20 publicly reported home invasions targeting crypto owners, up from a single incident during the same period last year. The total amount stolen through these attacks reached over $30 million.
