Mexico Arrests Suspects in Quadruple Homicide Linked to Alleged Bitcoin Heist
Two suspects, Diego Sebastián and Gerardo, have been arrested in Mexico for allegedly targeting a Bitcoin cold wallet during a quadruple homicide. The victims were Jonathan Meléndez, his pregnant wife, their daughter, and an employee at their residence in Atizapán de Zaragoza.
The suspects may face lengthy prison terms if convicted, with the Attorney General's Office of the State of Mexico (FGJEM) stating they could receive 25 to 70 years in prison per homicide victim. According to officials, one suspect had a business relationship with one of the victims and used it to gain access to the home.
This case is part of a broader trend of 'wrench attacks' where criminals use violence or threats to compel victims to hand over cryptocurrency or provide access to wallets. In the first half of 2026, there were 20 publicly reported home invasions targeting crypto holders in Mexico alone, compared to just one incident in the same period last year.
