Mexico Cracks Down on Illicit Crypto Mines Amid Electricity Theft Concerns

Mexico's Public Security Secretariat is expanding its search for illegal cryptocurrency mines across neighboring states, following the dismantling of a large-scale operation in rural northern Puebla. The secret mine, which siphoned electricity generated from Mexico's Nuevo Necaxa dam, was discovered to have around 300 computers.

The agency's head, Francisco Sánchez, stated that these operations consume significant amounts of energy and generate excessive noise, prompting operators to seek isolated locations. Authorities suspect the operation may have helped legitimize and launder profits from other illicit activities.
