Mexico Dismantles Massive Crypto Mining Operation Over Electricity Theft Concerns
Mexico's authorities have discovered a large-scale cryptocurrency mining operation in Puebla, sparking concerns about organized electricity theft. The investigation found approximately 300 specialized computers operating near the Nuevo Necaxa hydroelectric complex.
The facility, located in Tlaola, consisted of 300 GPU-based mining machines, transformers, medium-voltage terminals, and satellite internet equipment. Investigators also discovered an unauthorized power connection near the federal hydroelectric infrastructure.
The significant electricity demand is believed to have exposed the location of the facility. While cryptocurrency mining itself remains legal in Mexico, authorities are focusing on the alleged theft of electricity used to power the operation.
