Mexico Police Uncover Massive Crypto Mining Farm Financed by Cartels
Deep in Mexico's Sierra Norte mountains of Puebla, police discovered a large cryptocurrency mining farm that had been operating secretly. The facility, located over two miles from the nearest village, was found to contain 300 GPU miners humming away.
The operation was allegedly financed by organized crime syndicates and is believed to be one of four hidden crypto mining sites discovered in the area since 2025. Mexican law enforcement officials suspect that the facility was illegally tapping into the Nuevo Necaxa grid's hydro power, which was also used for the nearby village.
Analysts like David Saucedo told Reuters that cartels 'appear to have reached a new level of sophistication' with these hidden mining operations. The discovery has raised concerns about the extent of organized crime's involvement in cryptocurrency laundering and electricity theft.
