Mexico Seizes Over 300 GPUs from Suspected Illicit Crypto Mining Operation
Mexican authorities have seized over 300 GPUs from a suspected illicit cryptocurrency mining operation in Puebla. The facility, located near the Nuevo Necaxa hydroelectric system, was discovered by investigators who were following reports of possible electricity theft and money laundering.
The site contained around 80 medium-voltage terminals, eight satellite antennas, and a pedestal transformer, indicating an industrial-scale electricity supply. No evidence has been released linking the facility to a named cartel or identifying the specific cryptocurrency being mined.
Experts believe that the operation may have been used for laundering illicit proceeds, citing the technical knowledge and financial support required to install and maintain such equipment. Chainalysis estimates that illicit crypto addresses received at least $154 billion in 2025, driven largely by sanctioned entities worldwide.
