Mexico Seizes Suspected Crypto Mining Operation Linked to Money Laundering
Police in Mexico have discovered a suspected cryptocurrency mining operation in Puebla state that may be linked to money laundering. The authorities were alerted by excessive electricity consumption and mechanical noise from the facility, which is located near a sparsely travelled road in central Mexico.
The operation was found to contain 300 graphics processing units, 80 medium-voltage terminals, and eight satellite antennae, all configured for cryptocurrency mining. This process involves powerful computers competing to solve puzzles and generate virtual assets like Bitcoin.
Mexico's federal attorney's office declined to comment on the case due to an active investigation. However, security analyst David Saucedo noted that the operation would have required significant technical expertise and financial support from a well-funded group, possibly one of Mexico's most powerful cartels.
