Mexico Suspects Tied to Bitcoin 'Cold Wallet' Killing Spree
Two suspects in Mexico have been linked to the killing of four people on September 2 in Atizapán de Zaragoza. Prosecutors claim that Diego Sebastián and Gerardo, whose surnames are withheld, targeted a 'cold wallet' they believed held millions of dollars in Bitcoin.
The case highlights the growing trend of 'wrench attacks,' where criminals use coercion or violence to obtain access to cryptocurrency wallets. According to CertiK, there were 20 publicly reported home invasions targeting crypto owners in the first half of 2026, a sharp increase from just one incident in the same period last year.
The suspects allegedly entered the victims' home through a business connection with one of them and used violence to obtain access to the Bitcoin wallet. If convicted, each homicide victim could face a sentence ranging from 25 to 70 years.
