Miami Resident Pleads Guilty to $245 Million Cryptocurrency Heist
A Miami resident and Singaporean citizen has pleaded guilty to his role in a massive cryptocurrency heist. Malone Lam, who used several aliases including 'Anne Hathaway,' directed a cybercrime scheme that stole over $245 million from victims' cryptocurrency wallets.
The scheme operated through online gaming platforms and enlisted accomplices from various countries. The conspirators employed social engineering tactics to pilfer information, which they then used to empty victims' wallets.
Lam coordinated the activities of co-conspirators, choosing targets and directing the flow of ill-gotten cryptocurrency. The stolen funds were spent on lavish expenditures, including nightclub services, luxury goods, rental homes, private jet charters, personal security guards, and high-end cars.
The suspects concealed their theft by distributing the money across several cryptocurrency exchanges and mixing services before embarking on a spending spree.
