MiCA Compliance Costs Fuel Europe's Crypto Consolidation Wave

Share

The European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation has marked a significant shift for the region's crypto market, moving beyond the initial licensing phase. With the transition period ending on July 1, unlicensed firms must now either exit the market, sell to authorized providers, or transfer their European clients.

The U.K. Financial Conduct Authority will also open its authorization gateway on September 30, 2026, requiring crypto firms to comply with prudential controls, governance rules, and client-asset safeguards from 2027 onwards.

Large banks already have established compliance systems and networks in place, making it more cost-effective for them to partner or acquire smaller crypto companies rather than build everything from scratch. This could lead to a wave of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the region as smaller firms struggle to meet the new regulatory requirements.

While some argue that MiCA's strict regulations will drive consolidation, others believe it will bring about more competition and innovation. The report notes that only 194 crypto companies had obtained MiCA approval by May, while over 3,000 held registrations under earlier national systems.
