MiCA Compliance Deadline Fuels Crypto Scams in the EU
The implementation of the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation has led to an increase in crypto scams targeting EU investors, according to European officials.
The MiCA compliance deadline on July 1 required unlicensed businesses to stop operating and drove customers to seek out compliant alternatives. This migration has created uncertainty that scammers are exploiting by pretending to be regulatory authorities or licensed exchanges.
Cybersecurity experts have warned about the risks associated with large migrations, as investors may receive emails, proof of identity, and instructions on how to transfer money from scammers mimicking these messages.
The Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) has warned that investors looking for licensed providers could be targeted. French regulators have reported instances of law violators passing off as AMF agents and directing investors to counterfeit websites.
