MiCA Deadline Fuels Crypto Phishing Epidemic in EU
The European Union's MiCA regulation has created an opportunity for scammers to take advantage of crypto investors. With over 1,700 unauthorised providers forced to wind down their EU business by July 2026, a wave of phishing emails is sweeping across the continent.
These emails are convincing because they mimic legitimate withdrawal requests from supervisors or licensed trading venues. However, according to Stéphane Pontoizeau of the French markets regulator AMF, 'the current moment offers fraudsters a better opportunity than usual'.
So how can you protect yourself? The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) register is a key tool in verifying whether a provider is MiCA-licensed. You can also check the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority's BaFin database for German-based providers.
A legitimate wind-down notice will give you time to act, whereas scammers often try to rush you into making a decision. Be wary of emails that require you to log in or provide sensitive information, as these are common tactics used by phishers.
