MiCA Deadline Triggers Crypto Scam Wave in EU
The European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) has triggered a massive restructuring of the crypto sector, leading to over 1,700 platforms facing closure or market exit. According to estimates, only 323 companies have successfully obtained a MiCA license.
As part of the regulatory framework, CASPs that failed to secure a license were required to stop accepting new clients and phase out their EU operations by July 1, 2026. This has created confusion among users, who are receiving official notifications from exchanges and institutions, providing an opportunity for scammers.
Scammers are impersonating crypto exchanges and regulatory bodies, sending fraudulent messages to users, urging them to move their assets immediately via provided links or 'migration portals'. Regulators warn that they never request cryptocurrency transfers, disclosure of private keys, or fee payments to personal crypto wallets.
