MiCA Implementation Sparks Surge in Crypto Scams Amid EU Regulatory Vacuum

The European Union's crypto regulatory framework MiCA has been fully implemented, and scammers are taking advantage of the situation. With over 1,700 unlicensed crypto platforms suspending services to EU customers on July 1, millions of users were left without a place to store their digital assets.

Regulators warned that fraudsters are exploiting the migration process by impersonating legitimate platforms and regulators, directing users to fake platforms. The Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) stated that 'the migration process from unlicensed exchanges itself has become an attack surface,' and urged users to verify platforms on ESMA's official registry before moving assets.

Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) also issued a warning, noting that hundreds of platforms lost their legal status as of July 1. The FMA recommended verifying providers in official databases before transferring assets or moving them to self-custody wallets.
