MiCA Scams Surge as Fraudsters Exploit Confusion Over EU Crypto Rules

The European Union's MiCA framework has been fully in effect since July 1, and it's led to a surge in crypto scams. With over 1,700 unlicensed crypto platforms required to stop serving EU customers, scammers are exploiting the transition by impersonating regulators and demanding upfront fees from victims.

The tactics involve copying legitimate platform migration notices or posing as regulators to steer users to fake platforms. France's Autorité des Marchés Financiers reported that fraudsters have been impersonating AMF staff, while the European Securities and Markets Authority said its name and logo have been misused in crimes, including on forged documents.

The UK Financial Conduct Authority received 4,465 reports in the first half of this year involving scammers impersonating the FCA, with 480 people suffering actual losses. Regulators are urging users to verify authorized platforms and check ESMA's official register before transferring assets.
