Microsoft and TSMC Deepen Partnership for Custom Chip Production
Microsoft and TSMC are strengthening their partnership to produce custom-designed chips. The collaboration dates back to at least 2004, when TSMC manufactured chips for Microsoft's Xbox console.
The latest iteration of this partnership focuses on building AI accelerators, specifically the Maia line. The Maia 200 chip packs over 140 billion transistors onto a single chip and uses TSMC's cutting-edge 3nm process technology.
This chip delivers more than 10 petaFLOPS of FP4 performance, making it suitable for AI inference workloads. Microsoft is already designing next-generation Maia variants that are expected to arrive around 2026.
