Microsoft Stands Alone Amid Hyperscaler AI Spending Frenzy
Four major tech companies - Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, and Meta - are pouring massive amounts of money into building out their AI data centers. Collectively, they project to spend up to $630 billion in 2026, a 62% increase from the $388 billion spent in 2025.
Microsoft stands out among its peers as it limits the pace of its data center buildout rather than writing blank checks. While still spending aggressively, Microsoft's projected capex for 2026 exceeds $120 billion, but at a more measured pace compared to Amazon's sprint towards $200 billion in spending.
The energy angle is significant, with these massive data centers consuming enormous amounts of power and intensifying competition for energy resources. This has already led to Bitcoin miners pivoting to selling their energy contracts and hosting capacity to AI companies, as demand from hyperscalers grows.
Investors are now focusing on the ratio of AI revenue growth to capital deployed, with Microsoft currently leading this metric. The question is whether these massive investments will justify their returns before shareholders lose patience.
