MicroStrategy Sells Bitcoin at Below Cost Amidst Record Loss
MicroStrategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, reported an $8.22 billion net loss for the second quarter of 2026 on July 30.
The hit was mainly tied to falling Bitcoin prices, which were around the low $60,000s when the sale was disclosed.
The company's capital framework, announced at the end of June, authorized a Bitcoin Monetization Program that allows management to sell up to $1.25 billion of Bitcoin for approved purposes, including rebuilding its dollar reserve or paying preferred dividends and interest.
However, this does not translate to a $5 billion Bitcoin sale authorization, as initially reported.
The company has already crossed the line in practice, selling 3,588 BTC for about $216 million between June 29 and July 5.
