MicroStrategy's $75 Billion Bitcoin Bet Hits a Wall
MicroStrategy's Bitcoin holdings are facing scrutiny as the company's average cost per coin is $75,415.66, which is higher than the current spot price of $63,000. The firm holds 845,050 BTC, with a total value of over $63 billion. MicroStrategy uses convertible notes to fund its Bitcoin purchases, allowing it to buy without immediate cash outflows.
The company's recent 4,603 BTC purchase on August 31 cost $370 million and brought the total Bitcoin value to $63.73 billion. MicroStrategy's enterprise analytics business generates roughly $500 million in annual revenue, but this is a tiny fraction of its Bitcoin portfolio's value.
The firm has a significant debt burden, with a $2 billion zero-coupon bond maturing in 2030. Bondholders can convert debt into equity if the stock price is above $433.43, while below that threshold they will likely exercise their put option to receive $1,000 per bond in cash.
Institutional demand for Bitcoin is a floor, with the asset's dominance at 60% in April 2026 and an MVRV Z-score of 0.74 indicating holders are near breakeven. This historically precedes recovery cycles, making the market structure more firm.
