MicroStrategy's Bitcoin Bet Turns Toxic
MicroStrategy, once known as Strategy Inc., has become the market's most prominent Bitcoin treasury vehicle.
The company, which started out as an enterprise analytics software firm, shifted to a leveraged Bitcoin holding company after issuing continuous streams of equity and preferred stock.
The legacy software business still generates around $500 million in annual revenue but is now overshadowed by the balance sheet, which holds over 800,000 Bitcoins.
For several years, this structure worked well, with rising Bitcoin prices boosting the balance sheet, and the stock trading at a premium to its net asset value.
However, when Bitcoin declined by around 46% in the past year, the machinery that amplified gains started to amplify losses instead. MSTR's stock fell around 36% year-to-date and about 75% over the past twelve months, nearly double Bitcoin's decline over the same period.
