Mina Blockchain Upgrade Disrupts Zero-Knowledge Apps for Eight Hours
The Mina blockchain recently underwent an upgrade known as Mesa, which temporarily halted transaction processing for about eight hours on September 3. This caused exchanges to suspend MINA transfers and zero-knowledge apps (zkApps) to cease proof-authorized activity until new verification keys could be compiled.
The upgrade, which shifted the mainnet to the Mesa release, was a significant change for the network. The process split into two phases: five hours when blocks continued without transactions and three hours when no blocks were produced at all.
Mina's official upgrade runbook marked milestones as completed, including the Mesa package release at 16:30 UTC and the first Mesa slot at 18:00 UTC. Archive-node and manual node upgrades remained in progress this morning.
