Miners Told to Ditch GPU Plans for AI Infrastructure Focus
Bitcoin miners are being advised to focus on infrastructure development and diversify their operations rather than investing in GPUs for artificial intelligence (AI) applications, according to Mike Alfred, founder of Alpine Fox. At the Energy Investors Forum in Dallas, Alfred stated that AI infrastructure demand will remain strong for the next 20-30 years, despite potential market corrections and economic downturns.
Alfred emphasized that miners have a choice: either sell their facilities and energy or take on the additional risk of purchasing GPUs. He noted that owning GPUs can offer higher revenue and greater control, but also raises significant stakes, including equipment purchases, chip obsolescence, and capacity utilization.
The second option is colocation, where clients install their own servers and chips, while the site owner sells space, electricity, water, and cooling for the hardware. Alfred described this model as more conservative and compared it to real estate, noting that securing financing for it is easier.
