Minneapolis to Crypto ATM Operators: Shut Down by December 31
Minnesota's statewide ban on cryptocurrency ATMs (kiosks) took effect on August 1, 2026. The ban was enacted after the state recorded 134 kiosk-related scam complaints and nearly $1 million in reported losses over three years.
The law prohibits anyone from installing, operating, maintaining or making a virtual currency kiosk available for use in the state. It covers physical terminals that exchange cash, bank credit or another cryptocurrency for virtual currency.
Minnesota residents can still own, trade and transfer digital assets through other legal channels. However, operators must take their machines offline by August 1 and remove them from retail locations by December 31.
The ban is a response to the growing problem of kiosk scams, which often involve victims being coached remotely on how to complete transactions. Despite earlier attempts to regulate crypto kiosks with warnings, transaction disclosures, and receipts, scammers adapted by dividing larger amounts into smaller deposits.
