Minnesota Bans Cryptocurrency Kiosks Amid Scam Concerns

Cryptocurrency kiosks will be banned in Minnesota starting August 1 as part of an effort to prevent scams targeting residents.

The ban is aimed at protecting people from scammers who manipulate victims into depositing large amounts of cash into the machines, which allow users to quickly convert cash into digital currency.

The Rochester Police Department has investigated multiple reports involving people who were pressured into depositing thousands of dollars in cash into cryptocurrency kiosks. The scammers often contact victims over the phone and transfer the funds directly, making it difficult for victims to recover their money.

The Minnesota Attorney General's Office and local law enforcement have been working together since early 2025 to address the issue and advocate for stronger protections. By December 31, the machines will be physically removed from retail locations.
