Minnesota Crypto Kiosk Ban Enacted Amid Rising Scam Concerns

Minnesota's ban on cryptocurrency kiosks went into effect on August 1, following Governor Tim Walz's signature of a bill in May. The law prohibits operators from installing, operating, or maintaining virtual currency kiosks, with existing machines needing to be deactivated by August 1 and physically removed by December 31.

The ban was enacted due to concerns over scams targeting seniors, who had reportedly lost around $1 million from 2023 to 2025. The schemes often involved pressure to quickly send money based on fake emergencies.

This is not an isolated measure; several US states are considering similar restrictions in response to fraudulent activity. Tennessee enforced a total ban on crypto ATMs on July 1, while Georgia implemented laws with transaction limits and other restrictions on the same day.
