Monad Proposes Post-Quantum Upgrade Paths for EVM-Compatible Chains
Monad, an EVM-compatible Layer-1 blockchain, has proposed a draft Monad Improvement Proposal to address key management and quantum attacks. The proposal, authored by Kushal Babel and Jan Camenisch, introduces a flexible authentication layer that separates how users prove ownership from how their account addresses are derived.
This system allows users to change, add, or retire authenticators, including private keys, without updating their wallet address. Legacy secp256k1 ECDSA signature scheme remains compatible, but the proposal also opens the door to P-256, Ed25519, and ML-DSA, a post-quantum cryptographic standard.
The key management system runs through an AuthConfigManager precompile, which requires proof of possession and takes effect after a 3-block execution delay. This brief waiting period is designed to prevent instant hostile takeovers of accounts.
