Monad Proposes Quantum-Resistant Account Authentication

Researchers at Monad have published a proposal to upgrade account authentication on their blockchain. The draft design separates an account's permanent address from its credentials, allowing users to replace lost or outdated keys without changing their address.

The current method of deriving addresses directly from public keys is permanent and irreversible, but Monad's proposal breaks this link by storing a separate AuthConfig record inside the account state. This record holds the current authenticator set, signing policy, and reconfiguration policy, which can be updated while the address remains fixed.

The design also expresses permissions as threshold policies rather than a single signature check, allowing for more flexible authentication methods. Supported schemes include ECDSA on secp256k1 and P-256, Ed25519, WebAuthn passkeys, ML-DSA, and a ZK-OAuth verifier.
