MoneyGram Brings Stablecoin Spending to Millions Worldwide
MoneyGram has launched its first stablecoin-backed Visa card in Colombia. The card is built on top of Rain's infrastructure and allows users to hold USDC balances, which can be spent anywhere Visa is accepted. When the user makes a purchase, the stablecoin is converted to local currency in real-time.
The new card is an extension of MoneyGram's existing partnership with Rain, which powers Western Union's Stablecard as well. Colombia was chosen for its dense distribution network, with over 6,000 physical locations handling high volumes of cross-border money transfers. The country has a large remittance market, and MoneyGram aims to tap into it by offering a stablecoin spending experience.
MoneyGram plans to integrate its own stablecoin, MGUSD, which was launched in June 2026, with the Visa card. This will allow users to hold and spend their own stablecoins, giving MoneyGram control over both ends of the transaction. The move is seen as a significant development in the stablecoin market, where companies are competing to offer better spending experiences.
