Montgomery County Residents Fall Victim to Cryptocurrency Scams
Montgomery County residents are falling victim to cryptocurrency scams, with losses ranging from $1,300 to over $23,000. According to police, scammers call from fake phone numbers that appear to be the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and claim to be 'Lieutenant McDonald' or a similar name.
The scammer tells victims they must make payments due to missing jury duty and instructs them to deposit funds into a cryptocurrency machine while staying on the phone. However, as District Attorney Kevin Steele warned, 'no legitimate law enforcement agency will ever request payment via a Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency ATM.'
The Montgomery County Detective Bureau is investigating these scams, and authorities urge anyone who has been contacted by scammers to notify them immediately.
