MoonPay Launches PayBox: A Payment Vault for AI Agents
MoonPay has launched PayBox, a payment vault that enables AI agents like ChatGPT and Claude to initiate crypto payments and blockchain transactions under user-set limits. This innovation addresses a significant constraint for AI agents, which previously required users to intervene in the financial step.
PayBox uses key splitting across hardware-isolated enclaves, ensuring no single party can sign alone. It also employs passkeys, spending limits, and a kill switch to prevent unrestricted AI spending. An operation submitted through a valid permission counts as authorized by the user, even if they never reviewed it.
The rollout covers Solana and EVM networks, with x402 enabling direct payments for APIs. PayBox connects payment authority directly to the assistant, allowing it to execute approved actions from inside conversations. Users install it as a custom connector, register a passkey, and fund the vault from a bank account or crypto wallet.
MoonPay's earlier agent tooling kept private keys on the user's own device, but PayBox distributes fragments across enclaves instead. This removes single-device compromise as a failure mode while creating a dependency on enclave infrastructure. Funds move directly between the user's funding source and the merchant or recipient.
