MoonPay Unveils PayBox: AI-Powered Non-Custodial Payment Vault

MoonPay has introduced PayBox, a non-custodial payment vault that allows users to prepare and approve transactions through AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude. This innovation combines crypto wallets and payment cards in a single vault, enabling consumers to use AI agents for commerce without giving the assistant direct control over wallet keys or account credentials.

PayBox supports eight chains, including Solana, Ethereum, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum, and Polygon. The product uses the x402 standard, an agent payment standard developed by Coinbase and now governed by the Linux Foundation, to facilitate payments across online services.

MoonPay's approach removes the need for users to work with developer tools or manually connect separate wallets to each service. Users can choose between two permission models: 'Always Ask' requires passkey approval for every transaction, while 'Autonomous' allows the AI assistant to complete purchases within limits defined by the user.

The system uses infrastructure developed by Sodot, a key management company acquired by MoonPay earlier this year. PayBox plans to add decentralized finance functions within the next month, including token swaps, perpetual futures trading, and liquidity management under the same user-defined approval rules.
