MoonPay's PayBox Brings Crypto Wallets Inside AI Agents

MoonPay has launched PayBox, a payment vault that lives inside AI agents Claude and ChatGPT, allowing users to execute transactions directly through the chatbots. This innovation aims to close the gap between research and purchase for these digital assistants.

Wallet keys are protected by MPC (multi-party computation) and TEE (trusted execution environment) cryptography, ensuring no single party can access a user's funds or sign transactions alone.

The technology behind PayBox comes from Sodot, an Israeli key management firm acquired by MoonPay for approximately $100 million in April. This acquisition has already secured over $50 billion in assets and 10 million wallets for clients such as eToro and BitGo.

At launch, PayBox supports Solana and seven Ethereum-compatible chains, including Ethereum itself, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum, and Polygon. It also works with x402, an open payment protocol developed by Coinbase, which allows AI agents to pay any service built to accept agent-initiated transactions.

According to Ivan Soto-Wright, MoonPay CEO, 'The card hid the cash. The phone hid the card. This is the era where money disappears into conversation.' He emphasized that with billions of AI agents coming online, each will need a secure way to hold, move, and spend money.
