Moonwell Card Shuts Down Amid Nium Acquisition
The decentralized lending protocol Moonwell Card will shut down on September 6, 2026, as part of its acquisition by Nium. This means users must withdraw any remaining balance from their cards before that date to avoid losing access to it entirely.
The Moonwell Card was launched in December 2024 and allowed users to spend USDC through a Visa debit card at over 44 million merchants worldwide, with compatibility with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Its unique feature was the borrow-and-load functionality, which enabled users to borrow against their lending positions and load borrowed funds directly onto the card for spending.
The acquisition by Nium in July 2026 effectively ended the card program, as the new owner had no interest in continuing it. Since then, Moonwell has been guiding users on what steps to take next. Existing cards stopped working for purchases after August 7, and now the deadline for withdrawals is fast approaching.
Moonwell has confirmed that the core lending and borrowing protocol remains unaffected by the shutdown of the card product, allowing users to continue supplying assets, borrowing, and managing their positions without disruption.
