Morpho Hits $5B Loan Milestone as DeFi Lending Rival Closes In on Aave
Morpho, a decentralized lending protocol, reached an all-time high of $5 billion in active loans on September 1, 2026. This milestone marks a significant achievement for Morpho and highlights its growing presence in the non-custodial credit ecosystem.
The majority of borrowing activity on Morpho is denominated in stablecoins, with 95% of cumulative loans represented by stablecoins and USDC accounting for 62% of borrowed positions.
Morpho's growth can be attributed to its integration with Coinbase-linked institutional products, which has led to a surge in deposits on the Layer 2 network Base. As of August 6, 2026, Morpho reported that deposits on Base exceeded $5 billion, representing more than 70% of the total value deposited across that infrastructure.
Despite reaching this milestone, Aave still retains the leading position in the decentralized lending sector, with an active debt of $12.7 billion compared to Morpho's $4.83 billion. However, Morpho's isolated markets framework has enabled it to absorb capital flows stemming from institutional rotation and maintain minimal exposure during the KelpDAO security incident in April 2026.
