Mow Pushes for BSD: A Clearer Name for Hardware Wallets
Samson Mow, an entrepreneur and Bitcoin advocate, has proposed renaming hardware wallets to correct a common misconception about how they work. According to Mow, this term change could improve crypto user education, security, and adoption by reducing custody confusion and encouraging proper key management.
Mow's proposal is for the term 'Bitcoin Signing Device' (BSD), which more accurately describes what these devices do: store private keys required to access and authorize transactions, rather than storing Bitcoin itself. The blockchain remains the central location of all BTC, regardless of whether a hardware wallet is plugged in or not.
This distinction is crucial because it addresses a common misconception among new Bitcoin users that their coins are stored inside the device. By clarifying this point, Mow hopes to promote better understanding and security practices within the crypto community.
