MSCI World ETF Faces Dual Transition Amid Policy Review and Rebalancing
The iShares MSCI World ETF is set to undergo a routine benchmark rebalancing at month-end, alongside a more significant policy review that could reshape how global indexes treat companies with primary businesses holding assets like Bitcoin. According to MSCI Inc., three US-listed names will join the MSCI World Index in August, while ten constituents will be removed, including Allegion and Clorox.
The index provider is also dropping GoTo Gojek Tokopedia from Indonesia and Singapore's Sembcorp Industries from the MSCI Global Standard Index due to liquidity concerns and shifts in market capitalization. For holders of the ETF, this reshuffle amounts to a modest reweighting within an already diversified portfolio.
The fund's top positions remain untouched, with NVIDIA leading at 5.58%, followed by Apple at 4.81%, Alphabet at 3.87%, Microsoft at 3.76%, and Amazon.com at 2.76%. The consultation launched by MSCI on August 14 explores whether 'non-operating companies' should be excluded from the Global Investable Market Indexes.
Strategy, a Bitcoin-holding firm, pushed back publicly on August 14, arguing that index providers should reflect markets rather than adjudicate on corporate assets. The dispute highlights the growing influence of index providers over capital flows across entire asset classes.
