MSTR Surges Past $100 as Bitcoin Approaches $70,000

Strategy shares surged by 12.15% on August 19 as Bitcoin's price neared $70,000. This led to Michael Saylor's company, MSTR, closing above $100 for the first time in a while.

The strong performance of Bitcoin and its subsequent impact on MSTR's stock is not surprising, given that Strategy holds over 840,000 BTC, making it extremely sensitive to cryptocurrency price movements. This means equity investors have indirect exposure to Bitcoin through their investment in MSTR, while also amplifying gains and losses.

MSTR's CEO Michael Saylor warned shareholders that they may need to think on a time horizon of up to 10 years due to the company's complex financing structure, which includes using equity and other tools around its Bitcoin treasury. This was not a promise of a smooth recovery but rather a cautionary message.

It is worth noting that MSTR's Bitcoin holdings are currently valued at about $57.4 billion, compared to the $63.36 billion spent acquiring them. The company also sold 1,690 BTC for $108.6 million between August 3 and 9, using the proceeds to repurchase STRC preferred shares.
