MSTR's Bitcoin Sales Generate Tax Benefits, CFO Insists Market Impact Is Minimal
Michael Saylor's company, MSTR (formerly MicroStrategy), has been accumulating Bitcoin over the past year. In its Q2 earnings call, Phong Le, MSTR's CFO, explained that Strategy intends to monetize portions of its Bitcoin holdings for three primary reasons: building its U.S. dollar reserve up to $5 billion, funding preferred dividend obligations, and supporting up to $2 billion in authorized security repurchases.
The company currently holds approximately 843,000 BTC and is targeting an additional $1.25 billion in cash reserves. This would cover nearly three years of its current annual dividend and interest obligations of $1.76 billion.
In May, Strategy sold a total of 3,620 BTC for $216 million to fund preferred stock dividends due June-end. The transaction generated a realized loss that could translate into an estimated $59 million tax benefit.
Le emphasized that MSTR's buying or selling does not significantly influence Bitcoin prices. He noted that even during Strategy's largest week of accumulation, its purchases accounted for only 1.42% of market liquidity, and over the past year, the company's average daily purchases represented just 0.22% of Bitcoin trading volume.
While large sales could temporarily affect market sentiment, Le argued that 'Strategy needs Bitcoin,' and 'Bitcoin is extremely liquid.' He estimated that ongoing Bitcoin sales to fund annual preferred dividends would average roughly $5 million per day, or just 0.02% of average daily trading volume.
