Mt Gox's Decade-Long Bankruptcy Saga Continues with Ongoing Repayments

Mt. Gox was once the largest Bitcoin exchange in the world, handling over 70% of all BTC transactions worldwide at its peak.

In February 2014, Mt. Gox suspended withdrawals after discovering suspicious activity and ultimately disclosed that it had lost approximately 850,000 Bitcoins through hacking incidents and technical failures.

The company's CEO, Mark Karpeles, was found guilty in 2019 of falsifying data to inflate the exchange's holdings but was acquitted of embezzlement charges.

The Mt. Gox bankruptcy case took over a decade to resolve due to creditors' objections and the complex civil rehabilitation process in Japan.

Repayment to creditors didn't begin until July 2024, with the Rehabilitation Trustee still controlling a significant amount of Bitcoin that hasn't been distributed yet.
