Murfreesboro Police Enforce Tennessee's Ban on Bitcoin ATMs
Tennessee's ban on Bitcoin ATMs has taken effect in Murfreesboro, with local authorities conducting compliance checks at 30 businesses. On August 10th, detectives from the Murfreesboro Police Department's Fraud Unit visited establishments previously known to house cryptocurrency devices. Led by Sergeant Tommy Massey, officers delivered official letters and copies of the new law, which took effect on July 1st.
Every inspected business was found to be in compliance, with machines physically present but disconnected and awaiting removal. The crackdown is expected to reduce local scam reports involving cryptocurrency, following a six-month period where nearly $4.1 million was stolen from victims using such scams. Fraudsters often targeted elderly residents by impersonating law enforcement officers.
Sergeant Massey noted that Tennessee is now only the second state in the nation to outlaw Bitcoin ATMs, calling it a 'major step toward protecting citizens.' However, police caution against complacency, warning scammers will adapt and create new tactics.
