Musk and Coinbase CEO Share Concerns Over Charitable Giving
Elon Musk has expressed agreement with Coinbase Global Inc. CEO Brian Armstrong's criticism of traditional philanthropy, suggesting that some charities can be 'net negative' for the world.
In a video interview, Armstrong argued that well-intentioned charitable initiatives can produce unintended consequences, citing criminal justice reform as an example where some programs 'just increased crime.'
Armstrong uses a donor-advised fund instead of a private foundation, allowing him to recommend how money gets invested and distributed. He said he is interested in helping people see their ideas come to fruition through improving education, creating a more level playing field, or increasing economic freedom.
Musk has voiced similar concerns about the effectiveness of charitable giving, responding 'Sadly, yes' to criticism that MacKenzie Scott's over $26 billion in donations was 'making the world worse.'
