Musk Bets on Grok 5 as World's First Artificial General Intelligence
Elon Musk has announced that Grok 5 will be the world's first artificial general intelligence (AGI) model developed by his AI company xAI. According to Musk, AGI refers to AI systems that can match or exceed human performance across a wide range of tasks. In a recent X post, Musk revealed that he expects Grok 4.8 to finish basic training within the week, with 2.5 trillion parameters and running on a new C++ software stack developed by xAI.
Grok 4.7 has been compared to Anthropic's Opus 5.0, with both models being roughly equal in overall strength. Musk also mentioned that Grok 4.9 would aim for Astra or Fable-level performance. However, it is Grok 5 that he believes will surpass human capabilities.
Musk's AGI comments came on the same day he publicly supported a call from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to slow down AI capability development. This combination raised attention as Musk is racing toward AGI while also backing warnings about its dangers.
Chip stocks Nvidia and AMD dropped sharply after safety concerns and calls for slower AI development hit markets, with Nvidia falling 3.46% and AMD dropping 6.24%. Analysts point to risks such as AI systems pursuing goals that conflict with human values, concentration of power among a small number of companies, and capability jumps that are hard to predict or control.
