Musk Warns US Lead in AI May Be Threatened by China's Energy Infrastructure
Elon Musk has reiterated his warning that China is a strong competitor in the global artificial intelligence (AI) race. In a recent post on X, Musk stated that 'China is also by far the strongest competitor in AI,' referencing his previous comments about China's long-term challenge in rocket technology.
Musk has been emphasizing the importance of electricity and computing infrastructure in the development of advanced AI systems. He notes that China holds a significant advantage in electricity-generation capacity, which could prove decisive in the global AI competition.
Recent infrastructure deals between Bitcoin miners and companies such as Anthropic have highlighted the scarcity of grid-connected power, with Hut 8 signing a $7 billion lease for 245 MW of capacity at its RiverBend campus in Louisiana. TeraWulf has also signed a 20-year lease with Anthropic worth approximately $19 billion covering 401 MW of critical IT capacity.
The competition between the US and China extends beyond software into chips, electricity, and physical data-centre infrastructure. As AI laboratories race to secure enormous amounts of computing capacity, Musk's warning highlights a broader strategic question: whether America's lead in frontier models can be sustained if China continues expanding its energy and industrial infrastructure.
