Mysterious AI Model Ox Alpha Stirs Up Tech Community with Uncertain Origins
A mysterious AI model called Ox Alpha has been making waves in the tech community after it was released on August 20 without any attribution or company name. The model, which is free to use and supports multi-modal input including text, image, and video, claims to be a 'stealth model' designed for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workloads.
Ox Alpha has been tested against other top models, including Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol, on the DeepSWE benchmark. According to developer Ben Davis, Ox Alpha performed well in a 10-task sample, beating both Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol.
However, when Davis ran a full 113-task run, Ox Alpha's performance was more modest, landing near 63%, roughly level with GPT-5.6 Sol. This has led some to question the initial results, but others believe that Ox Alpha is still a strong contender in the field of AI models.
The identity of the model's creator remains unknown, but many have speculated about its possible origins. Some have suggested that it may be from Zhipu AI, given its similarities to their GLM-5.3 family of models. However, others have pointed out that GLM-5.3 launched as a text-only model six days before Ox Alpha showed up with full video support.
Ox Alpha is currently available for free on OpenRouter and through various other platforms, but its usage will be limited to 1 million tokens per context window and has generous rate limits in place.
