Mysterious Owner Burns $1 Million in Bitcoin, Leaves Analysts Baffled
A mysterious owner of a long-dormant Bitcoin wallet recently moved $1 million worth of BTC through a large crypto custodian, only to have it returned almost exactly three weeks later. This peculiar transaction was part of an even larger enigma surrounding the burning of $8.5 million in BTC in May.
Blockchain analysis from Chainalysis reveals that five wallets ultimately destroyed their Bitcoin were likely controlled by the same person, possibly an early adopter who had funds on the collapsed Mt. Gox exchange. The wallets show 'strong indicators of common ownership' and were initially funded on the same day in April 2014.
The owner's intentions are unclear, but it's possible they employed a planned liquidation strategy, sending fixed-dollar amounts when required rather than following an automated schedule. Another theory suggests they may have been testing an old wallet or custody arrangement after 12 years of dormancy, moving the coins through a major custodian and successfully getting them back to show that an old key and setup still worked.
Bennet notes that burning Bitcoin is irreversible, so whoever controls the private keys chose to send the coins somewhere they can never be spent again, rather than simply leaving them untouched. A very wealthy individual without heirs may have decided to permanently burn their coins rather than just destroying their keys.
