Nagel Cautions Against Rate Hike Speculation Amid Energy Price Concerns
European Central Bank (ECB) Governing Council member Joachim Nagel said it's too early to speculate on rate hikes. In a statement, Nagel emphasized that policy moves are dependent on energy prices. While he wouldn't rule out the possibility of moving into 'mildly restrictive territory,' his comments suggest a bias towards tighter policy if inflation risks re-emerge.
Nagel's statements come as the EUR/USD pair is down 0.01% on the day at 1.1610. His 7.1/10 FXS Speechtracker score indicates a more hawkish tilt than usual, but his warning against speculating on rate hikes tempers expectations for an imminent policy reversal.
The ECB's primary mandate is to maintain price stability, which means keeping inflation at around 2%. Its primary tool for achieving this is by raising or lowering interest rates. Relatively high interest rates will usually result in a stronger Euro and vice versa.
